Top Craft beer bars in Gothic centre of Barcelona

Top Craft Beer bars in Gothic Centre

In this article, you will find my honest intoxicated guide through top 4+1 craft beer bars in the Gothic area of Barcelona, which in fact could be easily performed in one evening depending on your resistance or by ordering cañas (Spanish name for half-pints), but that would probably kill a decent part of the fun!

Let’s go start our route and our own craft beer festival.

Ale & Hop

If you’re in Barcelona and you like craft beers this bar should be number one on your list. Seriously. It is located in Born area, close to Arc de Triomf, Urquinaona or Jaume I metro stops, and could be easily reached from any point of the Gothic area within 10 minutes tops.

When you reach the place, you will find yourself on one of the most pleasant and quiet squares of the Gothic area if not the whole city. During late June and July, it’s totally covered with yellow flowers falling from the trees around. So that’s it, sightseeing. ale hop - top craft beer bars gothic

Ale & Hop is one of those bars that never fail, whether you’re coming for fresh craft beer or vegan sandwich. It has quite ample working hours and there’s a chance you will find it half-empty if it’s not Saturday night.

It’s not huge, in fact, there are 2 spaces but they’re quite neat and one of them is used mainly as a restaurant, but the bartenders are so kind they would always try to find you a small corner to crash and have a pint of decent beer.

There’s always a dozen of fresh beers on tap with 2 traditional hand pumps, and you could not only try all of them by ordering a “cata”, sharing with friends or going berserk with pint after pint, but also take away some homework in their special bottles.

All prices are fair and actually somewhat lower than average in Gothic. Bar’s food offer is vegan organic food also tastes good (I’ve tried pasta with mushrooms) but I can’t say more because of lack of experience in vegan cuisine.

We all wondered to try this white wine and recognised apple flavours and mild acid taste so usual for ciders so we asked whether it was a cider and were even more amazed when it turned up like a decent white wine from local vineyards with these peculiar taste. Try it!

Beerlinale

This place is quite new but already deserved some great reviews which I actually found after stumbling upon it and walking in on Carrer del Carme, 7.

The bar has all the enchantment of Gothic’s architecture like brick walls, beamed high ceilings, Catalan aquatic tiles and at the same time has all new crispy bar table and other functional elements.

All looks great and invites to get in with around 15 beers on tap. However I’ve got a very subjective opinion that this bar could have had a bit more in terms of beer varieties on tap, because a good amount of them were from same Italian brewery or local Catalan brewery both quite similar for the taste, varieties and slightly overpriced which didn’t make a lot of sense for 0km craft beer.

I believe these higher than average prices are due to its 5-star location and great service provided which is more than fair. If you’re looking for something more specific like Norwegian Stout, or Belgian white, you’re gonna have to prepare to pay around 6 to 10 euros for half-pint but it usually worths the price.

Tapas and snacks in Beerlinale are looking delicious and rich, and I figured they have quite generous portions but didn’t have a chance to try although people around who did seemed to be quite content.

The crowd here is very diverse, from local white collars to bachelor parties to travellers, red-ish after their day on Barceloneta. it’s a new place so I think it’s still looking for its audience.

Overall, I will definitely recommend this bar for great space, unbeatable location and great quality of beers on tap.

Kaelderkold

This bar has a clean modern look and it’s located just steps from Beerlinale so you could definitely test and compare them in one evening. The crowd is more skater- and student- like but if you’re not any of them don’t be shy and enter if you’re able to find the corner because this place is quite busy during the weekends and through the week.

Kaelderkold won’t disappoint people who don’t have the thing for beer because it is also specialised on cocktails which are a huge plus. The beer itself is represented widely, with IPA’s from local breweries, Canadians or Danish, American Coffee Stout, or Belgian Abbey Dark which tastes just right.

I’ve got myself local Imperial Stout and was sipping it through the evening. In sum, nice crowd and clean design, great beers choice and cocktails for your girlfriend.

Craft Barcelona

This craft beer bar named Craft is a reopening of Gaelic which turned out to become one of my favourite bars in the area and being a secret place of mine, I’ve been keeping it for me for a long time but I feel that’s the time for revelations.

It is literally in the centre of everything but not much people seem to find it because it’s kind of hidden in dead end street. Check the map location to make sure you won’t have same problems with locating it.

The place has this classic pub design with barrels and wooden details and all. It’s 2 levels with the ground level reserved for comedy stand-ups and live concerts which I would like to see one day but never made it so far because in the first place it’s for craft beer and tapas.

Craft Barcelona

Tapas are quite classic and look delicious, and it’s Basque-style so you just take the ones you like and pay later counting the sticks on your plate. Beers on tap are very nice and If you’re fan of PA’s try Sierra Nevada.

After all other bars you could feel somewhat short in beers on tap, they usually have around 6-7 but it could be easily fixed with the varieties they have stored in the fridge.

Bartenders are friendly and helpful, prices in Craft Barcelona are actually very competitive and ones of the lowest in the area. You could get a pint of decent IPA for as much as 5 euros.

I would like to say more and I will when I get to visit their live music events. Craft is a decent pub that wouldn’t fail with great prices and service, in the most convenient location of the Gothic centre.

BlackLab

This bar has a lot of space and when I say a lot, I mean more especially when it comes to comparing it with other bars around. In fact, it wouldn’t be fair not to mention that it’s located in Barceloneta, which wouldn’t strictly count as the Gothic area but it’s made on the list because of space and huge summer terrace.

Most of the Gothic bars would only permit to have your drink on the only barrel at the entrance so you usually end up inside and who wants to stay inside on summer night in Barcelona? You’ve got my point.

It’s packed with long tables and benches Oktoberfest-like, shady during the day so you are almost guaranteed to feel the breeze of fresh air when it’s needed, and at night is still that good.

They have their own brewery and beers taste brilliant as it should be, and they change taps depending on season and schedule so you could figure out when to come back for the one you’d like to try next. They provide good and quick service and you could ask for plaids when it’s cold on the terrace.

And if you want some snacks as an accompaniment for a beer don’t go for nachos – they’re literally just nachos with mayonnaise and ketchup, no cheese or salsa provided. I would sincerely expect something more sophisticated for 6 euros nachos.

Overall, it’s a no-brainer choice for the space it offers, summer terrace and home-brewed beers, it would be great for big companies, bachelor parties or anything like that.

Other bars with craft beers in Gothic area you could also consider

Mosquito (Carrer dels Carders, 46, 08003 Barcelona) – a must for Asian food like Pho Bo soup, Thai fish cakes or classic dumplings, always different craft beers on tap but may be tricky to get a table, no reservations at all so mostly you end up in a list of waiting. If it’s just for a drink, pick another option like Ale & Hop(closest).

La Cerveteca (Carrer d’en Gignàs, 25, 08002 Barcelona) – good option indeed with various beers on tap.

CatBar (Carrer de la Bòria, 17, 08003 Barcelona) – it’s a small bar “hole in the wall” with over 5 tap beers, vegetarian menu and live music from time to time.
