La Nova Esquerra de l’Eixample district guide

Nova Esquerra de l'Eixample district guide

Though the streets of the district are geometrically perfect, there are always a lot of confusions with dividing Eixample into neighbourhoods.

La Nova Esquerra de l’Eixample (the new left side) used to be a part of the whole neighbourhood Esquerra de l’Eixample.

But while the city was growing and population expanding, the area was separated from a part which is now called L’Antiga Esquerra (the old left side).

What La Nova Esquerra de l’Eixample has to offer

This neighbourhood has a lot to offer. First of all its centric location makes easily accessible the rest parts of Barcelona. Everything seems to be around: barrio Gotico, Sant Antoni, Montjuic…even the beach.

Walking here and there was never so enjoyable. This enchanting city is the best place to walk until you drop. Though if you don’t feel like dropping and prefer to observe the surroundings in the air-conditioned public transport, you can take an advantage of the abundant traffic options in the area.

The neighbourhood is really vibrant and busy during the daylight, therefore at night, it becomes very quiet so nothing will disturb your precious sleep. Recharged and excited you may start a new day full of surprises and explorations.

Green open spaces of the area invite you to do a morning jogging or other sports activities. Nevertheless, idleness is also very welcome in the parks around. The most famous in the area is Parc de Joan Miró.

Here you can practice sports or read a book in serene tranquillity. From time to time Barcelona city council organises open-air concerts here, the music varies greatly; it may be too traditional and weird, but sometimes it is light and very pleasant.

The lower part of the park features one of the most recognisable works of Joan Miro – Dona i Ocell (woman and bird). In ambiguous shapes and bold and bright colours of the 22-meter high sculpture, it is quite challenging to recognise a woman or a bird.

But you must have got used to it since Barcelona is full of abstractions and psychedelic wonders.

The park embraces 30 artsy sculptures of Joan Miro scattered around. Try to find them all! And find more parks here, if you are into greenish city lungs.

Between the Parc de Joan Miro and plaza Espanya, there is a former bullfighting arena. When Catalunya was announced as bullfight free zone, the arena was remodelled in a shopping centre Arenas, embracing such famous brands as Calvin Klein Jeans, Desigual, H.E. by Mango, Superdry and more. Furthermore, a number of bars, cafes and restaurants are at your disposal here.

Go to the top floor, where you can find not only a number of good restaurants but also a large terrace with marvellous views of Plaza Espanya, Montjuic and other sexy parts of Barcelona.

The shopping mall is also a home to a huge cinema complex and quite decent flamenco show and museum. As for Flamenco, there are two types of tickets: with and without dinner. I strongly recommend eating in any other place, since the dinner is overpriced and not at all exciting.

La Nova Esquerra de l’Eixample is the right place to stay if you are looking for centric yet residential and quiet accommodation in the big city.

Perfect for couples with children, due to a number of green open spaces and tranquillity.

Apart from the park Joan Miro, there’s an enormous quantity of parks and gardens close by on Montjuic mountain.

It’s also good for business people due to a centric location, proximity to Fira Barcelona and a good transport accessibility.

Good for single travelers, since they won’t get bored in the area and easily find a company if necessary…It’s easy to access your favourite museums like MNAC.

This district is also within a walking reach to FC Barcelona stadium – Camp Nou, which means you could just take a walk after the match avoiding crowded metro and other public transports.

Eat in La Nova Esquerra de l’Eixample

Any other cafe of the neighbourhood found on the ground floors of these modernist buildings provide all the desirable conveniences.

Have café con leche (coffee with milk) in the morning and accompany that with a tasty croissant, while observing by passers on the sun-drenched terrace. Dip a churro in a delicious hot chocolate in one of the Churrerias in the area.

The district is full of down-to-earth local bars with high stools and cafes to grab a tasty bite. Some of them might not look chic or inviting but appearance could be deceiving.

Despite the centric location, the area is not too touristic and not so busy, so owners sometimes don’t put too much effort in redesigning and creating inviting outlooks of their places. So just follow your intuition and you will definitely find what appeals to your interest.
